INAUGURAL
GARDEN SCULPTURE COMPETITION

Owners of the Werai Teahouse and Nursery, TAS & Mandy Smethurst have come up with a novel idea and are calling on all artistic people of the Highlands to get involved.  In light of the fact that they have been unable to erect a new sign in the shape of a Teapot on their premises at Werai, they have decided to hold a Garden Sculpture competition and have some fun with the’ Teapot’ theme.

The signs that the Smethurst’s wish to erect are in the shape of a teapot.  “Well, we thought that if we couldn’t have the signs, then we might as well have the next best thing – real Teapots!!”  explains Mandy.  “One thing led to another, and before long the concept of a garden sculpture competition was born.  And you guessed it, this years theme is ‘Teapots’”!

The competition is open to anyone, with the only requirement being that the sculpture must be at least 1m tall, and in the theme of a teapot.  Entries will be received onsite at the Werai Teahouse & Nursery up until 5pm Saturday 12 September.  All entries will be displayed on the lawn and in the gardens of the Teahouse.

Judging will be done by the general public via a Gold Coin donation, with all money raised going to a local charity.  The charity this year will be the Exeter Rural Fire Brigade.

Voting will continue for a month and will coincide with Tulip Time.  Voting will close at 5.00pm on Sunday 17 October.  The entry with the most votes will receive the first prize of $500 cash.

“We’re hoping the community will get behind this novel way of raising money for a local charity and have a bit of fun at the same time.”  Mrs Smethurst exclaims with a bit of excitement in her voice.  “We have already spoken to some people who are planning on building a teapot from wrought iron.  But we are hoping to get some teapots made from recycled materials, as well as bright colourful and perhaps novel entries, plus maybe ones made from old corrugated iron.  Really the entries are only limited by ones imagination.  We are already thinking ahead and next year we might make the theme a teacup to go with the pots or even a cupcake.”

Entry forms and the conditions of entry are all available online at www.werai.com.au and follow the links.
