Nerida Gwynne Barnsley OAM grew up in the Southern Highlands of NSW in what she considers to be privileged times and circumstances. One of seven children, her parents were both respected schoolteachers. Jack and Heather Taylor (nee McDonald) both cherished their Scottish ancestry. Despite the hardships of Australian farmland droughts, the Great Depression and war service, their émigré forebears nurtured the Scottish tradition of advancement through education. It was natural for them to structure the lives of their children around a thirst for knowledge, both general and practical, and instill in them the morals and traditions of a Scottish Presbyterian background. They wanted them to live useful and fulfilling lives.
