Wombeyan Caves Drive
Length approximately 63km
Estimated Travel Time 2 hours
Tourist Drive 13 is the most adventurous of all the Southern Highlands Tourist Drives.
The road is suitable for conventional cars and wagons but it is not for caravans. Hidden in the Southern Highlands is the natural marvel of Wombeyan Caves. The most direct route to Wombeyan is via Mittagong along a winding, scenic mountain road.
Once you have turned off the Old Hume Highway, Wombeyan Caves Road will take you through pastureland and watch as the scenery changes into a more rugged bushland setting. This part of the drive is known as High Range. The sealed section of this road ends approximately 25kms after you leave the Old Hume Highway, from here on you will find an unsealed winding road for approximately 40kms until you reach Wombeyan Caves.
Along the way you will pass through the Rock Tunnel, an interesting “wonder of nature – with a little man-made help” and stop at the Burragorang Lookout (on your right). This section of the countryside is known as Bullio. The road continues to wind through spectacular scenery and up and around mountains until eventually it winds down to the Wollondilly River and Goodmans Ford. This is an idyllic spot to camp, picnic, fish or just relax and soak up the tranquility of the area.
From Goodmans Ford it is only 16kms further along to Wombeyan Caves, an excellent outing for adults and children alike. There are self guiding caves, guided tours and for those that are fit and want more excitement there are adventure caves (wild caves).
Overnight accommodation is available.
