Welcome to the town of Mittagong. Settled in 1821 and the home of the first iron smelting works in Australia. It was thought that the town would become a large industrial centre as coal, shale and iron were found in large quantities. The mining companies folded one by one and now all that remains of that era are the many gracious old buildings and small charming cot tages, built form local timber and sandstone.
The Southern Highlands Visitor Information Centre is also located in Mit tagong.
Continue through Mit tagong to Bowral. There are many specialty shops to browse through and a variety of cafes and restaurants. Bowral’s famous Bradman Museum of Cricket, is just a short walk from the town centre.
As you continue onto Moss Vale you will come across the “Pink Pub”. The Briars Inn circa 1848 and the more recent addition of the Country Lodge. Just down the road call into the Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve, a great place to relax a while. Cross the Wingecarribee River on your way into Moss Vale. Take in the Old Clock Tower, The Historic Walk and Leighton Gardens.
After leaving Moss Vale travel through rich grazing lands to Sutton Forest. On your left you will see the entrance to “Hillview”, the former Vice Regal residence. The Royal Inn and A Lit tle Piece Of Scotland, renowned for its Scot tish ware. The Highlands Equestrian Centre for anyone interested in furthering their horse-riding skills is situated on the right just after the intersection.
