This lecture provides a balanced insight into the life and achievements of one of the most important women in Chinese Imperial history. With the recent availability of Imperial records, plus re-evaluation of Cixi’s life, it is now possible to refute the traditional view that the Dowager Empress was a cruel calculating megalomaniac who hated foreigners, condoned corruption and resisted attempts to modernize China.
