Joadja was a kerosene shale mining town which operated from 1878 to 1911 under the management of The Australian Kerosene Oil and Mineral Co. After the collapse of the industry, the town was sold in 1911 and it's people left the valley. Today, the property is open for visitors wanting to explore this bygone era and the natural beauty of this hauntingly magical place.

The new Joadja Distillery pays homage to the thosands of Scottish miners and their families who made the journey to this country all those years ago. Joadja is open for private group bookings on a "rent a town" basis (Ts andCs apply) or you can join a tour on one of the many open days. We recommend you book as we have limited seats on the guided tour tractor-train (people movers). Please note that due to Council restrictions, visitors are not allowed to wander around the property.

You can book a private guided tour where you have virtually unlimited access to the valley (minimum charges, Ts and Cs apply. Email us for more information on this option).

TOUR DETAILS

Tours of the Joadja Historic Site are conducted at 11am and 2pm on the following dates. These tours run approx. 90 minutes and are conducted using our purpose-built people movers, so you will not be having to walk much. There will be opportunities for you to get off the people mover and walk around the ruins, take photos, etc. After the tour of the ruins you can also do the Joadja Distillery Tour which is FREE OF CHARGE and includes tastings. You will see the magic behind how we make Single Malt Whisky, Dry Gin, Rum, Brandy and more.

We advise that the Historic Tour is not recommended for children under 5 years of age.
