With lyrics by Tim Finn and book by Carolyn Burns, 'Ladies in Black' is based on Madeleine St. John's 1993 novel, 'The Women in Black'.
Set during the pre- Christmas rush of a Sydney summer in 1959, this all Australian musical follows the story of smart and and bookish Lisa Miles, who has gained holiday employment in prestigious, Goodes Department Store, while anxiously awaiting her results from the Leaving Certificate. Under the guidance of sophisticated, Hungarian refugee Magda, Lisa learns to appreciate the world of fine fabrics and European fashion, in her role as salesgirl in the exclusive, Model Gowns section.
This is not where Lisa wants her working life, nor her education to stop. She loves her colleagues and family, but her dream is to gain university entrance, where she can study to become a writer. First however, she will need to gain approval from her conservative father.
